The Texas Rangers are on the verge of acquiring free agent RHP Doug Fister, first reported by NBC sports Boston. The deal is for 1 year, worth $3.5 million with an option in 2019. Once Fister passes his physical, the deal will be finalized.
This deal definitely makes sense for the Rangers considering where they are as a franchise. The team went 78-84 and finished 4th in the AL West. They are looking to get back to possible wild card status again and with their current rotation, it doesn’t look too easy. They traded their ace of the rotation for the past 4-5 years in Yu Darvish back in July. Texas now needs to regain stability with Darvish no longer being there. Although Cole Hamels and Martin Perez are still there, it’d be best for them to solidify the back end of the rotation as well.
Fister was 5-9 with a 4.88 ERA last season in 18 games with the Red Sox. He has a career ERA of 3.68 though which is very impressive. Fister is 33 and could certainly be a low risk-high reward player for Texas this year.
