The Los Angeles Angels have signed one of the most touted prospects in baseball, and with the signing, still have enough money for Japanese star Shohei Otani.
Kevin Maitan was one of the best prospects signed out of Venezuela in a few years. At 17 he burst on the scene for the Atlanta Braves minor league system and had decent years in the Braves rookie ball league.
This offseason the Braves were caught illegally signing some of their players so they lost Maitan and 12 other prospects. Besides that, they also lost draft picks and other important pieces. (as written about by our Bryce Barton)
After that situation, Maitan was a top prospect and a free agent. After sitting as a free agent for about half a month, The Angels have reportedly picked up Maitan.
This move stirred up controversy between the people on social media because the Angels were one of the teams left in the Shohei Otani sweepstakes.
Now why does that have anything to do with the Maitan signing? Because to sign Maitan, the Angels had to use International Bonus Pool money, which is the only way teams can sign Maitan and Ohtani.
This is a HUGE get for the Angels as their top prospect is Jo Adell who is currently unranked in the MLB.com Top 100 Prospect List, meanwhile Maitan is sitting at #38, this will slot Maitan as the #1 prospect in their system.
