Major League Baseball has a good number of underrated players that are free agents this offseason. These players are not the names you will hear day in and day out until they sign somewhere, but they will certainly make a major impact wherever they go.
Lance Lynn (SP)
Lynn has been solid throughout his entire career. The main hindrance he faces is his health. Among the different injuries and surgeries he has had, the most alarming is the Tommy John surgery he had to have following the 2015 season. This caused him to miss the entire 2016 season. Lynn is 30 years old, therefore his role would most likely be as a veteran starter at the backend of a rotation. I wouldn’t expect a team to sign him to any kind of long term deal due to his age and injury history.
Prediction: Lynn signs a 1-2 year deal with the Orioles
Tyler Chatwood (SP)
Colorado has struggled with their rotation for years now. One consistency they did have was the solid outings Tyler Chatwood gave them. His home/road splits were insane however, as you’d expect for a Rockies starter. He pitched to a 6.01 ERA in Coors field and a 3.49 ERA on the road. Chatwood is one of the more underrated starters the MLB has, which could be due to the fact that he pitches in high elevation. I think the Rockies will make a great effort to keep him around.
Prediction: Rockies re-sign Chatwood to a multi-year deal
Matt Adams (1B/3B)
With the way Adams played in 2017, and what he did for the Braves, its amazing that he made it to the free agent market. I thought the Braves would have tried everything to keep him around. They seem to be settled with Johan Camargo at 3rd and are comfortable with letting Adams go. When Freddie Freeman went down last year Matt Adams stepped in and carried the weight for the Braves, For over a month he was absolutely raking. So much so that when Freeman did come back, they didn’t want to take his bat out of the lineup so they moved Freeman over to 3rd temporarily. Adams hit .274/20/65 last year and is 29 years old.
Prediction: Royals sign Matt Adams
Eduardo Nunez (2B)
Another player that gave his team a boat-load of consistency is Eduardo Nunez. While he was with the Twins he was close to being a star player. Nunez has a lot of tools and can do pretty much everything. He’s a great mix of contact, power, speed, and glove work. He was traded this past July from the Giants to the Red Sox and helped Boston throughout their playoff push. in 2017 Nunez hit .313/12/58/.341, a very impressive slash line that looks great to teams looking for a viable 3rd baseman. I expect Nunez to sign a deal for at least 3 years considering the fact that he is a well-rounded player and is only 30 years old.
Prediction: Nunez signs a 4 yr deal with the Angels
We will update the status of these free agents and more upon them signing or re-signing with a team.
