The last time New Era Field hosted an outdoor hockey game it snowed, and the game ended in a shootout, Today, it snowed and the game ended in a shootout as USA rallied to defeat Canada 4-3.
Canada struck quick as Cale Makar found the back of the net 4 minutes into the game to give Canada a 1-0 lead
Later in the 1st, Canada doubled their lead when Dillon Dube sniped USA goaltender Jake Oettinger on the power play.
USA finally got on the board late in the 2nd period after Kiefer Bellows capitalized on a 5 on 3 power play to bring the US within one. However, Canada was quick to answer as just 1 minute later Boris Katchouk gave Canada a 2 goal lead heading to the 3rd period.
As conditions in Buffalo worsened, the U.S. didn’t give up. Midway through the 3rd period, Canada’s Maxime Comtois leveled American defensemen Ryan Lindgren with a questionable hit from behind. Comtois received a 2 minute minor and the Americans capitalized on the ensuing power play when Scott Perunovich scored to bring the US within one.
Just 34 seconds later Brady Tkachuk beat Canadian goaltender Carter Hart to tie the game at 3. The rest of the 3rd would be scoreless and this game would head to overtime.
After a scoreless overtime, just like the 1st ever Winter Classic at New Era Field, the game would head to a shootout, and that’s where the US would shine. Kiefer Bellows and Brady Tkachuk scored for the US in the shootout while American goaltender Jake Oettinger stopped all 4 of Canada’s attempts as the US completed the comeback.
The US bounced back after a tough loss to Slovakia last night to improve their record to 2-1. Canada will look to bounce back after a tough loss as they play 0-2 Denmark tomorrow night.
There was only one other game played today as Russia defeated Belarus 5-2. Klim Kostin once again led the way for Russia with 2 goals as they improve to 2-1.
